A week in Switzerland. Stop three: Zurich (& a day trip to Liechtenstein)

12088316_10156110361040068_2536617233478166792_n.jpgThe train journey from Bern to Zurich was direct and only took an hour. I’d heard mixed reviews from people on Zurich so was slightly apprehensive about visiting. However my initial impression was that it wasn’t that bad after all.

My first stop, as always, was the tourist office where I collected as many leaflets and maps as I could! The employees were the friendliest and most helpful I’d encountered so far – good start Zurich! I decided to sit by the river and concoct my own walking route around town.

The weather was glorious for the duration of my stay and my walk took me through the winding streets but somehow I always managed to arrive back at the river. I guess I was just drawn to it’s beauty.

Whilst in Zurich I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to visit another European country – Liechtenstein. I found a deal on Viator where I could go there and explore the Heidilands for a reasonable £60. Now, normally I wouldn’t call a £60 tour reasonable, but you have to take into account I was in Switzerland and things are way more expensive there!

The coach tour left town at 10am and included a tour of the city before we headed off into the mountains. Although the tour was 8 hours long, we probably only spent an hour in Liechtenstein, but it was long enough to get a photo, a passport stamp (you have to pay for it, but as a European I don’t ever get stamps so this was exciting) and a postcard.

After this we headed off to Heidiland to see the original “Heidi House”. This was the most idyllic setting and honestly the drive here was through some of the most beautiful countryside I’ve ever seen. I fed mountain goats (and used an awful lot of hand soap afterwards – but so what, I still did it!)

This was the perfect end to my first Swiss adventure. I boldly made a claim as I was leaving that this is my favourite European country. What I know for sure is that I’ll definitely be going back to visit again soon.

  1. Actually, you’d be surprised at how many things you can do in Zurich at a low cost and even for free. It’s a lovely city with a fabulous old town.

  2. I guess it’s all in perspective but £60 to visit another country sounds an unbelievable deal when you come from Australia / New Zealand! To see more of the Europe countryside would be well worth it.

  3. Interesting to hear that you thought Switzerland was your favourite European country! It’s one of the few I haven’t been too yet, so maybe I have been saving the best until last!

  4. Glad you had decent first impressions of Zurich – I went during winter so the whole town was covered in snow and it was magical! I didn’t get the chance to take in the day trip to Liechtenstein, so hopefully next time 🙂

  5. Wow! Strong statement that it’s your favorite, but I do love Switzerland as well. As an adrenaline lover, Interlaken is one of my favorite places. I look forward to exploring the country more.

  6. I really need to go back to Switzerland to see more than just Geneva. I like how you stop at the Tourists office to get pamphlets. I do the same thing! You just never know what coupons might be there 🙂

  7. We haven’t made it to Switzerland yet, but I’d love to visit! Glad to hear you enjoyed Zurich and that the tourist office was so friendly–always nice to hear different opinions about spots with conflicting info. The Heidilands sound like they would be cool to check out as well. Looks like a great trip!

  8. Sounds like you’ve had a blast. I’ve only been to Zurich on a layover and never left the airport, but would like to visit properly. And I couldn’t say no to the Heidi house either 😀

  10. What an amazing place. I have not been to Switzerland yet, except to change planes. I remember thinking it was so beautiful, even outside the airport window, that I have to get back there.
